The good ol' 'pottalam'

This was how provisions used to be packed by the friendly neighbourhood grocer. An environmentally sound practice which we urbanites have nearly forgotten. This kind of simple packaging (just a neat newspaper folded in the shape of a cone, then tied up with jute string) can still be found in rural groceries.
Perhaps we should go back to the past to give ourselves a better future?

Water chestnut - 'singada'

Singada - water chestnut. Has a mild taste, I found, when I saw it for the first time in a busy Delhi market. Found it different from the made-in-China looking blemish less fruit varieties, that looked more like show pieces rather than health food!
